The Indonesian island of Sumatra is an ideal place for growing coffee. It has high altitudes thanks to its Barisan mountain range, rich volcanic soil and plenty of rainfall due to the annual monsoon season. Lower elevations on the island typically will grow Robusta coffee beans while higher elevations will usually grow Arabica beans.

Indonesia has been growing coffee for more than four centuries. In recent years, coffee from Sumatra has been the primary focus of coffee lovers because many of the other islands of Indonesia had to stop growing Arabica coffee trees after a widespread infection of coffee rust.
