KINGSTON, TASMANIA, June 23, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Diane Tompson, Managing Director and Co-Owner of The Powercom Group Pty Ltd, has been named a Worldwide Branding Professional of the Year in Operations Management. While inclusion in Worldwide Branding is an honor, only a small selection of members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, years of service, and the credentials they have provided in association with their Worldwide Branding membership.
Ms. Tompson has 22 years of professional experience, with seven years as a managing director and co-owner of The Powercom Group Pty Ltd. Over the years, she has established herself as an expert in people management, as well as strategic thinking, board and governance procedures, lean manufacturing processes and in an earlier career, music education. She is directly responsible for managing the board and in this role she organizes meetings for the advisory board which governs the organization. With an eye on future success, she helps to formalize the strategic direction of the Powercom Group as a key member of its board.
Ms. Tompson is an entrepreneur, with an ability to reason and perform creatively. With knowledge of board procedures and governance, she has the ability to work with others collaboratively to reach an optimum and positive outcome. She also has an excellent understanding of lean manufacturing processes and the difficulty of all areas of compliance faced by Australian and Malaysian manufacturers.
In addition to her manufacturing career, Ms. Tompson has been extensively involved in music education. She has instructed at a tertiary, high school and primary school level, gifted and talented institutions and as a private tutor. She has a comprehensive understanding of music education and the challenges musicians address daily in relation to musical performance, and a comprehensive understanding of audience participation and appreciation of music.
From 1974-1997, Ms. Tompson was a specialist music teacher and during a break from music teaching whilst raising her three children, she also established a small enterprise, "Kit n Kaboodle," designing and manufacturing applique kits for enterprising sewers. Whilst a student of the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music, she tutored music and drama at the Tasmanian Youth Theatre and wrote scripts and performed for the ABC production, "Music Around Us." Upon her return to music teaching in 1984, she was elected Treasurer of the Australian Society for Music Education's Tasmanian chapter. In 2008, Ms. Tompson became the Founding President of the Alumni of the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music.
In business, she attributes her success to hard work and the ability to work with others and in the fact that she surrounds herself with talented employees. She has discovered that she must be extremely flexible in both thought and deed and quickly adapt to changing business conditions. In addition, she has had to learn what her core strengths and weaknesses are and to use those strengths when required. She became involved in manufacturing because she and her husband, Phillip, the founding team, established Powercom Consultants in 1991 and their electronic manufacturing company Novaris in 1993, due to Phillip's background in engineering. Due to her initial complete lack of business acumen, she has had to learn very quickly how to run, manage and then grow her business. Novaris is now a recognized leader in the manufacture of power and surge protection products which are sold globally.
Ms. Tompson received a Diploma of Company Directors from Australian Institute of Company Directors, AICD in 2007, a Bachelor of Education from the University of Tasmania in 1991, a Tasmanian Teaching Certificate in 1976 and a Diploma in Music from the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music in 1973. In 2009, she became an appointed fellow of AICD and in 2014 became a fellow of RSA, adding to her extensive list of affiliations and certifications. In 2014, she was accepted to a panel of the Australia Research Centre and in 2014, received a TIAW World of Difference Award in Washington, D.C. Furthermore, in 2009, she was the first female recipient of the Gold Medal Award for the AICD for her board appointments and community involvement and in 2011, an IWEC Award for Entrepreneurship.
Diane actively promotes the importance of women in leadership roles and has an aspiration to help less advantaged women to become successful entrepreneurs. Through her work with leading women's organizations such as TIAW, IWEC, FCEM and WCEI, she contributes to keeping the women of Australasia and the Pacific connected to their peers across the globe.
