foodtweeks App Supplies Over 5,000 Meals to Families in Need

Free App combines power of food banks with interactive users to fight hunger.

foodtweeks users have removed more than 3,000,000 calories, which has resulted in more than 5,000 meals donated to local food banks, all at no cost to the user.

STAMFORD, CT, June 26, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- foodtweeks, a free app that combines weight control with feeding the hungry, today announced that foodtweeks users have provided 5,000 meals to date to feed hungry families across the United States.

Through this app, every time a foodtweeks user "tweeks" calories out of their food, foodtweeks makes a donation to a local food bank that provides the same number of nutritious calories to feed hungry families. foodtweeks users have removed more than 3,000,000 calories, which has resulted in more than 5,000 meals donated to local food banks, all at no cost to the user.

With the dual purpose of creating a healthier country through providing nourishing foods to families in need and allowing its users to make better choices, foodtweeks offers a unique approach to using an app for weight control. Users simply tell the app what food they are thinking of buying, eating or preparing and the app instantly displays images of suggested "tweeks" that remove enough calories to make a positive difference - but not in a way that changes the taste or leaves users hungry.

Actively engaging in donating calories becomes even easier when posting a tweek on Facebook or Twitter doubles or triples each donation. By simply switching from fried to baked potatoes and posting that they used the tweek on Facebook, users can be responsible for helping to feed children in their area more nutritious meals while enjoying a similar advantage themselves.

foodtweeks maintains a crowdsourced picture database of more than 44,000 small changes that show users how to "tweek" everything from a particular brand of cheeseburger at a national restaurant chain, to grocery store purchases and homemade dishes of every kind. These small changes help the users engage with their community in a fun way that is making a difference in the lives of the food-insecure.

"foodtweeks makes it possible for weight-conscious consumers to serve their communities by feeding the hungry, all while cutting calories from their favorite foods in an easy, enjoyable way," said Elisa Shannon, foodtweeks Executive Vice President of Partnership Development.

According to Ms. Shannon, foodtweeks' growing nationwide network now includes 34 of the nation's leading food banks from Massachusetts to California.

"foodtweeks is rapidly expanding its partner-base to food banks all across the nation, with more joining each week," said Ms. Shannon, herself a former food bank executive. Food banks that wish to affiliate with foodtweeks may contact Ms. Shannon by email at [email protected].

Engaging a mobile community to contribute to their local food bank is an idea that sprung from Walker Health Labs, designers of surprising commercial solutions that also make a difference for big social problems.

Jay Walker, the inventor of foodtweeks, is also the chairman of Patent Properties and curator of TEDMED, the health and medicine edition of the famous TED conference. A noted entrepreneur, Mr. Walker has founded three companies that serve more than 50 million customers. He is best known as the creator of Priceline, which brought a new level of value to the travel industry.

foodtweeks is a free mobile phone app that helps people better manage their weight while feeding the hungry at the same time. Its goal is to change the way people view their food while ending food insecurity in America.
