Mr. Jones has utilized his own personal time to work with the program for the recovery of 1,640 unaccounted American Vietnam veterans, along with 300,000 missing Vietnam soldiers. As a county veteran's service commissioner for 10 years, he is also providing financial assistance and other services to veterans and their families. He has helped produce documentaries on American Vietnam veterans and Vietnamese soldiers who have not returned from war and how it has affected their surviving families. He has participated in tours to retrieve soldiers missing in action, and has done public speaking on his own Vietnam service. In the future, Mr. Jones, who is a problem-solver, would like to see more cultural exchanges taking place to increase positive relations.
Retired from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Mr. Jones served in the U.S. Navy on active duty for five years, and completed two tours in Vietnam before retiring as a Navy lieutenant. He attributes his success to his experience as a Vietnam veteran. His career evolved because of his Navy service and wanting to continue being of service to his country.
Mr. Jones maintains affiliations with the Veterans Initiative, the Vietnam Veterans of America, the American Legion, VFW, and the Ohio Veterans Service Commissioner Association. He is a board member of the Vietnam Veterans Buckeye Foundation, and the former president of the Licking County Farm Bureau Federation.
Awarded for his tireless and honorable work, Mr. Jones was named the Ohio State Vietnam Veteran of the Year in 2010 and an inductee of the Chapel of the Four Chaplains in 2009. Charitably, he supports the various conservation and veterans' causes. He also performed post graduate coursework in hydrology, agriculture and water quality after earning a bachelor's degree in geology, with a minor in naval sciences, from the University of Washington in 1964.
