GREENVILLE, SC, July 04, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Manifest Auctions, at 361 Woodruff Rd in Greenville, South Carolina, is offering for auction a collection of more than 200 scarce and rarely seen banknotes.
The collection represents examples of paper money that was used in The United States between 1862 and 1935. The highlight of the sale is expected to be an 1896 $5 silver certificate that could sell for more than $20,000. Another note that was issued in the early part of the 20th century by a bank in Fairbanks, Alaska should also auction for over $10,000.
"This collection is unique in that virtually none of the notes have ever been recorded in any collector census or sold at auction previously," says Manning Garrett, Manifest Auctions president and director of banknote auctions. "The general public is well aware that coins can be worth significant amounts of money. However, many people are quick to dismiss paper money as worthless. In today's auction market we are actually seeing rare currency sell for amounts similar to what equally important coins are worth."
One of the most interesting things about our old money is that it looks nothing like what we are used to seeing today. The banknotes are about 35% bigger and richly engraved. Some are even hand-signed. It is easy to understand why these survivors of a past financial era are deeply coveted by the group of people who actively collect them.
