"It is our position that CPA's paralegals do not fall within any exemptions to the overtime laws."
MINNEAPOLIS, MN, August 07, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- On August 4, 2014, a former employee of CPA Global Support Services, LLC ("CPA Global") filed a collective and class action in Minnesota federal court seeking unpaid overtime wages under federal and state law. The suit alleges that CPA Global misclassified its paralegals as exempt, and as a result, failed to pay them overtime wages when they worked more than forty (40) hours in a workweek. According to the complaint, CPA Global is a third-party provider of outsourced legal services.
Michele Fisher, an attorney representing the plaintiffs, stated, "It is our position that CPA's paralegals do not fall within any exemptions to the overtime laws. The position does not require a prolonged course of advanced study and does not require the requisite level of independent discretion and judgment to disqualify them from overtime pay for the long hours they dedicated to the company. We are seeking back pay and additional liquidated damages for these employees."
The lawsuit seeks to recover overtime pay for all current and former paralegals employed by CPA Global at any time within the past three years. The case is entitled Bailey v. CPA Global Support Services LLC., and was filed in the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota. The case number is 0:14-cv-03091-MJD-JJK.
