BROOKLYN, NY, August 23, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Simon S. Rabinowitz is a board certified physician in Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition. He is a well-respected physician who has served an inner city population and surrounding area for more than 25 years. During that time he has been an academic physician scientist actively involved in teaching medical students, pediatric residents and pediatric gastroenterology fellows. He has published a number of scientific articles and regularly presents his research in national meetings.
In 1983, Dr. Rabinowitz received his medical degree after he completed the PhD-MD program at the University of Miami Medical school. Subsequently he completed his training in Pediatrics and Pediatric Gastroenterology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. Over the last 25 years, Dr. Rabinowitz has been a member of prominent associations such as American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), American Gastroenterology Association (AGA), American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (NASPGHAN) and Sigma Xi.
After completing his fellowship, he accepted a position to build a division of Pediatric Gastroenterology at the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center. The division grew under his leadership and included a training program for young physicians seeking a fellowship in this field. His training program was among the first small group of programs in the United States to be certified by the American College of Graduate Medical Education. In 1999 he joined an affiliate program of Pediatrics, at the Long Island College Hospital, where he served as Vice chairman. In 2003 he became the Chairman of Pediatrics at St Vincent Medical Center where he also served as the program director for their Pediatric residency program. All the while he remained an active clinical pediatric gastroenterologist. In 2011, he rejoined Downstate as the Vice Chairman of Pediatrics for Clinical Practice to pursue research opportunities in the medical school.
Dr. Rabinowitz has provided clinical care, lectured, and written on many aspects of pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition. He has published original work on Hepatitis C, portal hypertension, providing nutritional support for children with developmental delay, gastroesophageal reflux in children, mitochondrial (metabolic) liver diseases, diagnosing necrotizing enterocolitis, tumors in children with AIDs, Hirschsprungs disease, eosinophilic esophagitis, and Helicobacter pylorii and written chapters for text books on normal infant feeding, malabsorption, HIV enteropathy, gastroenteritis, Gilbert Disease, liver failure, pediatric endoscopy, toxic megacolon, gastrointestinal bleeding, and esophageal ingestions in children. He has also authored a number of articles of an internet based encyclopedia for doctors (Medscape, Emedicine) including: failure to thrive, Meckel Diverticulum, protein losing enteropathy, cholestatic liver disease, beriberi, pellagra, marasmus, Dubin Johnson syndrome, Cronkhite-Canada syndrome, and performing abdominal examinations in children. Dr Rabinowitz is actively involved in the community providing lectures for physicians and ancillary health care providers. Recently, he started a support group on Staten Island for children with eosinophilic esophagitis which he continues to direct with a mother of a child with this condition. Dr Rabinowitz has received a number of awards including being in all 15 editions of Metropolitan New York City's Top Doctors published by Castle and Connolly. He regularly provides second opinions for children with undiagnosed or poorly controlled gastrointestinal, hepatic, and nutritional conditions.
