In 1989, Dr. Pappas received his medical degree from George Washington University. Dr. Pappas completed his internship and residency at Georgetown University, which also included a surgical internship and an ophthalmology residency at George Washington Hospital Center. Following his residency, he pursued and completed a Clinical Fellowship in vitreoretinal diseases and surgery at the Retina Institute of Maryland (now known as the National Retina Institute) in Baltimore, MD. While there, Dr. Pappas performed clinical research and participated in landmark clinical trials investigating both medical and surgical retinal treatments.

Dr. Pappas has presented his clinical research in local, regional and national symposiums on ophthalmology and retinal diseases. He currently holds a teaching position at Georgetown University/Washington Hospital Center Ophthalmology Residency and Vitreoretinal Fellowship programs. He is a member of various associations such as the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Retina Specialists, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.

Dr. Pappas actively participates in many local community outreach programs, one of which is sponsored by the Prevention of Blindness Society of the Washington Metropolitan Area, Montgomery County. Since 2004, the Consumers' Research Council of America has recognized Dr. Pappas for nine consecutive years as one of America's Top Ophthalmologists.
