Dr. Sherin is a powerful example of an exceptional professional who uses his talent for the greater good of the people.
ORLANDO, FL, September 03, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Kevin M. Sherin, MD, MBA, MPH, Health Officer and Director of the Florida Department of Health in Orange County, has been named a Worldwide Branding Professional of the Year in Health Education & Advocacy. While inclusion in Worldwide Branding is an honor, only small selections of members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, years of service, and the credentials they have provided in association with their Worldwide Branding membership.
Dr. Sherin is an inspiring health care professional with three decades of experience. Upon graduating from Notre Dame with Honors in Pre-Med, he pursued his MD at Loyola Medical School. At UIC-affiliated MacNeal Hospital, he completed his residency and served as chief resident. After his residency completion, he worked as a family doctor at Christ Hospital on Chicago's Southwest side, at Rush Medical College in Chicago, and studied public health at UIC. For ten years, he served as a Program Director of the UIC-Christ Family Medicine Residency Program. He recruited prospective residents, trained them and supervised their inpatient and outpatient care units. During his tenure, more than 90 students graduated. During his later time at Christ Hospital, he received research grants and developed tools that would be beneficial to underserved communities on Chicago's South Side. One such tool was the highly regarded HITS, for intimate partner violence screening, for which Dr. Sherin holds a copyright. The acronym corresponds to questions that elicit information about how often a woman's male partner Hurt, Insulted, Threatened with harm, and Screamed at them. This questionnaire has been used nationally as an innovative approach to helping women in dangerous relationships and is highly regarded in the world of medicine.
As well as combating domestic violence, Dr. Sherin extends his efforts to improve HIV and infectious disease prevention. He served on numerous State and Federal panels in public health and family medicine, including co-chairing a CSAT TIPS task force for drug courts and alternative case processing. Dr. Sherin has served on ACPM's Clinical Preventive Services Task Force and the AMA Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement. He was a past chair of the Florida Public Health Institute Board and serves on the Board of the Florida Institute for Health Innovation. He is the current chair of the Prevention Practice Committee for the American College of Preventive Medicine.
Dr. Sherin joined the Florida Department of Health in Orange County in 2004. Here, he supervises budgets of $37 million and a staff of over 500 while overseeing clinical operations. He also plays an important role in the Department's handling of health protection, education, maternal and child health, epidemiology, and environmental & school health services. DOH-Orange monitors health disparities and protects the health of over 57 million residents and tourists annually.
Dr. Sherin also has teaching appointments as a clinical professor at FSU College of Medicine, and UCF College of Medicine. He has lectured on numerous medical topics including hepatitis prevention in family medicine, immunizations, intimate partner violence, and the H1N1 novel influenza and pandemic response. He has also authored textbook chapters and numerous scientific articles on topics such as immunizations and vaccine preventable diseases, infant mortality data analysis, EPI outbreaks, substance abuse, intimate partner violence, and prostate cancer and osteoporosis screenings. Dr. Sherin also continues to provide primary care as a volunteer in free clinics. He was named the Volunteer Physician of the Year by the Shepherd's Hope faith-based clinic in Orlando for 2014.
Dr. Sherin separates himself from his peers because few physicians aspire to work in public health at the present time. He wants to help the public as well as address the forces that are creating unhealthy conditions in the first place. He is most proud of being successful in serving as an advocate for others and contributing to the needs of disparate populations in multiple settings. Dr. Sherin is a powerful example of an exceptional professional who uses his talent for the greater good of the people.
