Lorena Riol Blanco, Ph.D., Named Professional of the Year in Immunology

    SAN FRANCISCO, CA, September 08, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Lorena Riol Blanco, Scientist at Genentech Inc., has been named a Worldwide Branding Professional of the Year in Immunology. While inclusion in Worldwide Branding is an honor, only a small selection of members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. Dr. Riol Blanco has 14 years of professional experience. As an expert in autoimmune diseases, she is responsible for managing senior research associates in her own group. Her primary research involves designing and initiating projects that study the role of peripheral nerves in the initiation and modulation of inflammation in autoimmune diseases in order to design new drugs to alleviate inflammatory diseases.

Looking back over a career that has been filled with achievement, Dr. Riol Blanco attributes her success to her focus and ability to break her goals into smaller goals, so that they are even easier to achieve. She became involved in her profession because she has loved the field of biology since she was 13. She was always fascinated with why people get sick and how the immune system works. Her greatest achievement was having the courage to move from her little town and take the train to Madrid to earn her Ph.D. at the age of 22. At 27, she took a leap of faith and moved from Madrid to the United States, although she did not know anyone. But she had a passion for what she believed in and wanted to accomplish her goals.

In the future, Dr. Riol Blanco wants to research and discover a drug to help people solve issues with auto-immune deficiencies like psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis or lupus. She also wants go back to her old school and show them what she has accomplished and be a positive role model. She is honest with herself. She knows what she is excellent at, and which areas could use improvement. Furthermore, she understands that she can seek help from her colleagues and peers to learn any skills that she does not currently possess.

Dr. Riol Blanco received a Ph.D. in immunology from Universidad Complutense de Madrid in 2007, as well as a master's degree in cellular and molecular biology from the same university in 2003. She then completed postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School. She is a member of The American Association of Immunologists, Inc. and has received a young investigator award from Biogen Idec in 2010. In years to come, Dr. Riol Blanco intends to continue networking in the field of medicine.
