Laurel Silenzi Honored for Excellence in Health Care Administration

    HAMILTON, ON, September 16, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Laurel Silenzi, Clinical Coordinator of BORN Ontario, was recently named a VIP member of Worldwide Branding. This special distinction honors individuals who have shown exceptional commitment to achieving personal and professional success.

Ms. Silenzi has 37 years of professional experience, with two years as a clinical coordinator of BORN Ontario. Throughout her career, she has established herself as an expert in neonatal, and transport medicine, while also utilizing data and her clinical background to inform the transport medicine field, with a particular focus in the neonatal arena. On a daily basis, she is responsible for ensuring that data regarding births is entered accurately at birthing hospitals and midwifery practices in Ontario. This involves analyzing data, as well as facilitating centers to utilize the data to initiate quality improvement.

Ms. Silenzi spent 32 years as an NICU transport nurse and 12 years as coordinator of the neonatal transport program at McMaster University Medical Center. She has chaired multiple provincial committees, and has presented at many conferences on transport medicine and transport education. Ms. Silenzi has also completed a Simulation Specialist course. Furthermore, she participated in developing a Provincial Standardized Transport Clinician Education program. She is passionate about utilizing data to inform best practices and improve the patient experience.

Looking back, Ms. Silenzi attributes her success to taking opportunities that align with her values and beliefs. She also credits maintaining academic exposure combined with continuation in the clinical world. She became involved in her profession after starting her career in the U.S. as a flight nurse and falling in love with transport medicine. She then relocated back to Canada and got a nursing job in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, where she helped to develop a provincial neonatal transport program. BORN Ontario then recruited her as a neonatal specialist.

Ms. Silenzi is currently pursuing a master's degree in health management from McMaster University, having received a Bachelor of Science in nursing from McMaster University in 2009. She is a member of the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario, a neonatal resuscitation instructor and co-chair of the Provincial Maternal Newborn Advisory Committee for MOHLTC. In years to come, Ms. Silenzi aims to be in a provincial leadership role, advancing the improvement of health care services.
