Online Gemstone Gamblers Always Lose!

"We are constantly amazed at intelligent people buying Gemstones online who get scammed," according to Wayne Sedawie, founder of Gemrockauctions.

GOLD COAST, AUSTRALIA, September 22, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- "We are constantly amazed at intelligent people buying Gemstones online who get scammed," according to Wayne Sedawie, founder of Gemrockauctions.

Many people buy from large online sites, or market sellers and build up collections of Gemstones. As it is so enjoyable to own gemstones from all over the world and does bring lot pleasure owing a genuine product.

Majority of these purchases are never tested for authenticity and when they are offered for sale a professional buyer knows straight away they are not genuine. Its same as buying leather bag and walking away with a plastic bag, but product knowledge disappears with novice gemstone buyers.

Having owned retail outlet, Mygem, we have seen collections bought over the years that have majority of fake items. Most of these have been purchased online or at Jewelry auction clearances. Having seen tens of thousands dollars of gemstones that were fake but bought as natural we have categorized where these gems were bought. Buyers lose their money when they buy their gemstone and this is important to analyse how these sellers get picked in first place.

Minimize your exposure to the following:

(A) Large online sites that sell everything
These site do not control what seller offer and have no policing of listing accuracy--we have seen 20 gems purchased from one store with over 6000 feedbacks and all 20 gems were synthetic.

(B) Jewelry clearance auctions
Genuine clearance sales are good opportunities but you need product knowledge before buying as auction buyers do get emotional and bid higher as easy to get excited. Beware auctions held in public places that consist of several sellers as one offering. Many dealers in the trade dispose of unwanted jewelry in these auctions as its cavit emptor when the hammer falls. We have seen many dealers offering tray gemstones and its spiced which means several king stones are synthetic.

(C) Country source
From my experience the majority of gems that are synthetic are sourced from Thailand. Then American based sellers who buy from Thailand followed by Hong Kong Sellers. Many scrupulous Thai gem dealers spice their listings, especially parcel deals so it's hard online to tell if natural or not. On visits to Thai gemstone trading town, Chanthaburi you can see offices that have had several names on online sites, They close site when they get bad feedback and just open new site new name but same premises and owner. Many American sellers do buy from professional Thia sellers but be aware if seller says he has been buying from this supplier for years and trusts him.

In reality this means the seller dose not check, verify or certify the gemstones from this supplier. Professional buyers always check and do random checks as reputation is so important to genuine Gemstone traders. Gemstone Traders' have a saying: "Your word is only as good as your last trade."

Certified Gemstones
First always insist on buying certified gemstones. It might seem obvious that buyers do not want spend extra $20 to certify if a gemstone is natural. With so many treatments available today the price between man made and natural is huge but even if gemstone is heated or not can affect the re selling price.

Not all Gemstone laboratories are the same GIA and AGL have good reputation and we actually check and approve laboratories
