Seafood 101 Helps Families Celebrate Pacific Northwest Seafood and National Seafood Month

The 2nd Annual Seafood 101 program helps families celebrate Pacific Northwest seafood from October through November 2014 with a special newspaper supplement, tours, demonstrations, festival and other free events.



The vision is to help families learn about eating healthy with seafood, and to show how NOAA, industry and community leaders work together to maintain a safe, sustainable and viable fishing industry.

    SEATTLE, WA, September 25, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Celebrate Pacific Northwest seafood with the 2014 Seafood 101 program, a unique partnership between government, the maritime industry, and community organizations, which offers the Puget Sound region an exciting series of activities to showcase the value of seafood to our health, environment and economy.

"The vision for Seafood 101 is to help educate kids and their families about eating healthy with seafood, and to show how NOAA Fisheries, industry and community leaders work together to maintain a safe, sustainable and viable fishing industry," said Rebecca Reuter MS, Communications Specialist at Seattle's NOAA Alaska Fisheries Science Center and Seafood 101 co-organizer. "Seafood 101 hopes to achieve this through educational programs, cooking demonstrations, tours of our port and fishing vessels plus other free activities."

This is the second annual Seafood 101 program. The 2014 program celebrates the Centennial of the Port of Seattle's Fishermen's Terminal and kicks off with the Fishermen's Fall Festival on Saturday, October 4. Events continue during National Seafood Month in October, and will culminate with Pacific Marine Expo, which will be held November 19-21 at the Century Link Field Events Center. The Expo is the largest commercial marine trade show on the West Coast.

Key Seafood 101 Programs
- A special 12-page Seafood 101 supplement will be published in the Seattle Times on September 28. The supplement will feature a cargo hold full of stories about the value of seafood and the industry. The supplement will also be distributed to classrooms throughout the Puget Sound region as a part of The Seattle Times-Newspapers in Education (NIE) program, which currently serves over 44,000 students and nearly 1,000 educators in Washington state.

The supplement will also be inserted into the Anchorage Daily News on October 5.

The inaugural 2013 Seafood 101 program won First Place, Division A - Traditional NIE Stories and Curriculum - Partnerships - for Daily newspapers 10,000 circulation. Details at http://nnaweb.org/newspaper-and-education-contest.

- Free walking tours of Fishermen's Terminal and other Port of Seattle facilities, demonstrations, classes, a special recording session of KIRO's Seattle Kitchen Show with Chefs Tom Douglas & Thierry Rautureau, and lots of other special events will be held through November 2014.
