Mr. Caldwell has more than 44 years of experience in labor and employment law, including several years in federal government service and as a partner with DeLong, Caldwell, Bridgers & Fitzpatrick. On a day-to-day basis, Mr. Caldwell offers expertise in cases stemming from the Equal Employment Opportunity Laws, the Fair Labor Standards Act, the National Labor Relations Act and the Occupational Safety and Health Act, and ERISA. As an arbitrator and mediator, Mr. Caldwell serves private parties and governmental entities as a personnel-hearing officer. Mr. Caldwell's other daily responsibilities include drafting and interpreting employment contracts, severance agreements and non-compete covenants, and providing day-to-day legal advice to managers and individuals about employment related decisions. He serves as General Counsel to the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police, Inc., and to the Georgia Chapter of the FBI National Associates. He is an adjunct professor in human resources management and law at the Law Enforcement Command College of Columbus State University.
Mr. Caldwell embarked on the legal profession in the late 1960s. Looking for a way to become more relevant, he viewed practicing law was a better way to effect positive change in the world than the occupation that he had been pursuing: drama criticism. He graduated from Catholic University's Drama Department with Honors in 1968. Mr. Caldwell received a Juris Doctor degree in 1971 from Catholic University's law school where he was an Editor of the Law Review and Student Director of its Legal Services Office.
He worked for the National Labor Relations Board General Counsel in Washington, D.C. and Baltimore and since 1976 in private law firms in Washington and Atlanta. He served as Chairman of the State Bar of Georgia Labor and Employment Law Section, and has maintained the highest peer rating ("AV Preeminent") by the Martindale Hubbell Law Directory/ Lawyers.com for more than 20 years. For five consecutive years he has been designated as a "Georgia Super Lawyer," and both Georgia Trend Magazine and Atlanta Magazine have named him as one of "Georgia's Top Attorneys." He is admitted to practice in all federal and state courts in Georgia, Maryland and Washington, D.C and is a Member of the Bar of the U.S. Supreme Court, the Bars of the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the 3rd, 5th and 11th circuits, the U.S. District Courts for the Northern and Middle Districts of Georgia and the Northern District of Florida. He is a founder former President and a current Board member of the St. Thomas More Society of Atlanta.
Married to Mary Jane Caldwell, President and CEO of Lady Jane Custom Footwear, the Caldwells have one son, Dr. Jon-Michael E. Caldwell, an orthopedic surgery resident at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. Dr. Caldwell is a 2013 graduate of Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons, and of the Biomedical Engineering School at Georgia Tech.
