"All of them have made a positive impact on humanity and many have had a significant positive impact on women"
SANTA MONICA, CA, November 02, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In honor of National Author's Day and to celebrate the release of her new book, The Gratitude Game, bestselling investment author and Huffington Post columnist Natalie Pace celebrates the seven authors for whom she is most grateful. In addition to the deeply personal impact these authors have had on Ms. Pace, all of them have made a positive impact on humanity and many have had a significant positive impact on women.
1. Zora Neale Hurston. This extraordinary writer died broke and unrecognized by the literary community in 1960. However, her writing went on to inspire our Beloved Toni Morrison (who won a Nobel Prize in Literature) and our national treasure, poet Maya Angelou, who read her poem "On the Pulse of Morning" at President Clinton's first Inaugurations. Hurston's best known works include Their Eyes Were Watching God and her autobiography, Dust Tracks on a Road.
2. Professor Karen King is the Hollis Chair of Divinity at Harvard Divinity School and a leading authority on women and the Christian Church. Her translations of Coptic Christian texts revealed an ancient text fragment, considered to be authentic, where Mary Magdalene was referred to by Jesus as "my wife." Her studies, writings and inquiries have forced us to rethink the way the early Christian Church treated women and sexuality, and, in particular, the role of Mary Magdalene as "The First Woman Apostle."
3. Kay Koplovitz, board director of Time Inc. and Kate Spade, founder of USA Networks and the 1st female CEO of a television network (which she created). Kay Koplovitz's book, Bold Women, Big Ideas is a business book every woman should read. Kay's work on behalf of women goes beyond writing books, however. She created and chairs Springboard Enterprises, which is a venture capital platform for women, and she continues to play an active role in getting more women on the boards of Fortune 500 companies.
4. Professor Gary Stanley Becker. Nobel Prize winning economist who quantified the value of human capital, and the importance of educating citizens and keeping them healthy as the foundation of a healthy economy.
5. Shakespeare. Shakespeare understood perhaps better than any other author how the catharsis of stories told from multiple perspectives and angles, including humor, lead us to discover the truths of humanity better than dogma does. The fact that Siri on my iPhone doesn't recognize the name Falstaff means that most of us need to read more Shakespeare. No author is quoted more frequently, outside of The Bible.
6. Mary Wollstonecraft. Mary Wollstonecraft's book, A Vindication of the Rights of Women should be required reading for every developed world citizen. Today, women under 30 are making more money than their male counterparts (and graduating from college and advanced degrees in greater number than men). That kind of equal opportunity would never exist without Mary's work and writing in the 1700s.
7. Queen Elizabeth I. Queen Elizabeth I proved that women could rule as well as (or arguably better than) men during a time when women were not even allowed to be heirs to any estate. You can read her speeches at Royal.gov.UK.
