NEW YORK, NY, November 13, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- On a gala night dedicated to celebrating the 30th anniversary of the cult classic, Motown action film "The Last Dragon," and to honoring the legacy of martial arts and pop culture icons including the late Jim Kelly, Fred "The Hammer" Williamson, Ron van Clief, Gloria Hendry, and Cynthia Rothrock; the creative duo of MSHINDO KUUMBA, and URAEUS (Richard G. Tyler II), popularly recognized in comic book circles as BlackOps, earned a resounding sweep of the comic book competition for the second consecutive year.
The capacity crowd gathered for the 2014 Urban Action Expo Awards at the Empire AMC Theater in Manhattan, roared with approval as the BlackOps produced JAYCEN WISE won back-to-back-to-back-to-back awards for Best Cover; Best Art/Design; Best Story; and Best Comic Book. A clean sweep that matched the achievement at the 2013 UAE Awards, when the BlackOps produced INDIGO: ESSENCE OF THE ASSASSIN dominated the comic book competition in similar fashion.
This year's winner, Jaycen Wise: Hero at Large, chronicles the adventures of an immortal warrior, and hero from The Golden Ages of antiquity, charged with the lofty responsibility of battling the forces of darkness to ensure the eternal preservation of knowledge, truth, and light. He is the anti-tomb raider; liberating stolen artifacts and returning them to their rightful homes. Crafted by creative director/writer URAEUS following a life-changing study mission to the Nile Valley, Egypt, the franchise is his gift to his three sons, and to children around the world who seek heroes in their own image.
Master illustrator Mshindo Kuumba, lent his incomparable talents and artistic stylings to bring this dream to life; along with a virtual all-star team of talented artists, such as Charlie Goubile, John Jennings, Stanley Weaver, and Sean Hill. The result is a hero unlike any other; built to stand the test of time, and reclaim a legacy; lost, but not forgotten.
The awards ceremony was the capstone of a spectacular weekend at the 2nd Annual Urban Action Expo and Showcase at the Midtown Hilton NYC; highlighted by film screenings; martial arts, multimedia, and entertainment workshops, demonstrations, panels, and seminars, organized by Demetrius Angelo of ASC Troopers Touch Entertainment, and sponsored by HBO and Cinemax.
Mshindo Kuumba is an art director, visual artist, comics creator, and cover artist who has lent his skills to such comic creations as Jaycen Wise, Indigo, The Horsemen, Ebony Warrior, Batman, Nightwing, and Supergirl; as well as the award-winning Dynasty of the Magi video game franchise. His masterworks have also graced the covers of Vertigo Comic's Django Unchained, Queen Afua's Heal Thyself, and Charles Saunder's Dossouye, and Imaro novels.
Richard G. Tyler II is a writer, designer, artist, and publisher recognized, under the pseudonym URAEUS, as the creator of the award-winning spy-fi franchise, Indigo: Essence of the Assassin, as well as the award-winning action/adventure series, Jaycen Wise; described in Black Comix: African American Independent Comics Art and Culture (Random House) as "an icon of black comics."
