NEW YORK, NY, January 01, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- How-to-SAFETY takes part in Safe Kids Global Road Safety Summit in Washington D.C., the kickoff for Safe Kids Worldwide's Safe Roads | Safe Kids campaign to significantly raise the issue of global road safety on the international agenda and reduce child morbidity and mortality resulting from traffic collisions around the world. The campaign is aligned with the United Nations (UN) Decade of Action for Road Safety. An early focus of the campaign and the Summit concentrates on planning for meaningful events around the world in conjunction with the third annual UN Global Road Safety Week to be held May 4 -10, 2015.
More than 500 children are killed every day as a result of traffic collisions, and tens of thousands are injured, often suffering lifelong disabilities. By 2015, road traffic injuries will be the leading health burden for children over the age of 5 years in developing countries. While 88 countries experienced a decrease in the number of road traffic deaths from 2007-2010, 87 others experienced an increase. Thousands of children die each year on their way to and from school. We have an urgent responsibility to do more to respond to this deadly epidemic.
The Summit intends to enhance the awareness of global road safety and to reduce the number of deaths and injuries among children by focusing on action-oriented goals and meaningful outcomes concerning traffic injury prevention. UN Global Road Safety Week, which is a critical part of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety is themed on children, with planned impactful activities and campaign events to be conducted all over the world encouraging more nations to pass tough road safety laws and back them up with strict enforcement. Participants are asked to sign the Child Declaration for Road Safety at http://www.savekidslives2015.org , a call to action for the Third UN Global Road Safety Week that urges policymakers to take strong action on this issue.
Safe Kids Global Road Safety Summit addresses key safety topics that specifically affect children, such as pedestrian safety and safe school zones, child passenger safety, and bicycle safety and motorcycle safety. It includes sessions to plan specific action steps to: increase awareness; accelerate advocacy; improve research, data collection, and monitoring and evaluation; and expand programs.
The Safe Roads | Safe Kids campaign draws together partners at all levels in a broad coalition demanding swift progress for children, including international organizations, governments, NGOs, foundations, researchers, the private sector, families and children to fight back against a killer that must be stopped.
