WILMINGTON, NC, January 16, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Author Laura Lynn Ashworth is now appearing on The Authors Show. In her interview she discusses her latest work, 'Letters To Loretta From The Radio Shack, A True WWII Teenage Love Story'. Ashworth's book lets readers experience World War II, both in battle and on the home front, through the eyes of adolescents in a way that Hollywood movies have never portrayed.
The book is a dramatic tale of two teens during the final climatic years of WWII, from letters exchanged from 1943-1945. The letters are between Sal, a young radio man deciphering Morse code out of the Navy's radio shack on a minesweeper in the Pacific and Loretta, 15, who is from his neighborhood in Chicago. Information about the minesweeper, the USS Signet and its activities at sea while Sal is aboard are also logged and include real-time descriptions of D-Day and the Battle of Okinawa.
"When I ran across these letters," Ashworth stated, "I knew I had to share them with the public for their historical significance alone, but I was also taken aback about how frankly and comically these two teens discussed such serious issues of the time and what tremendous responsibilities they had to home and country at such a young age. Their uncanny social insights, romantic love and humor in the most dire of times was fascinating to read."
Historical significance aside, the book is one of a kind, in that it allows modern day readers to experience directly the day-to-day thoughts, feelings, desires and insecurities of two people involved in events that changed our world forever. Readers will also get a look at how communication took place before cellphones, social media and email. Sal and Loretta discuss war, military service, politics, music, family, love and relationships. The conversations are very real, very raw and often very funny.
