SALT LAKE CITY, UT, February 06, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Hallmark Channel's Second Annual Kitten Bowl premiered Sunday, Feb. 1, and the Humane Society of Utah was chosen to host a coinciding Kitten Bowl Party. Bringing awareness to the plight of homeless cats across the country and the importance of adopting shelter dogs and cats, the "Kitten Bowl II," presented by Hallmark Channel and North Shore Animal League America, hoped to surpass last year's 200 feline adoptions. Winning new forever homes, HSU adopted out 76 cats, 46 dogs and three rabbits during the weekend event.
Kittens were adopted out quickly the first day along with cats, puppies and dogs. HSU hopes to win a grant for its efforts, to be awarded by North Shore Animal League later this month.
"A total of 125 pets found new homes over the weekend and we couldn't be more excited for them," said Deann Shepherd, HSU representative. All potential adopters first completed an application process to ensure that the animals were going to good homes. Adopted pets were spayed/neutered, came with their first series of vaccinations and received a free microchip from AVID.
Kittens and cats were transferred to Humane Society of Utah for this event from other locations in Utah, increasing the number of lives saved. "It's not the season for kittens here in Utah but there are many kittens and cats in need of homes at other locations... We work to transfer those animals here to help find them homes," Shepherd said. HSU works with over 200 shelters and rescue groups to ensure every adoptable animal finds a loving home.
Special $10 adoption fees for cats seven months of age and older and $20.15 for kittens will continue through Feb. 6. Best Friends Animal Society awarded a grant to HSU to supplement the discounted adoption fees and help increase the number of adoptions.
