Each aspect of The City's annual Livery Companies Pancake Race, which takes place in the beautiful Guildhall yard, is allocated to the relevant livery - the Gunmakers start each heat with a bang, the Clockmakers are responsible for the accuracy of the timing, the Fruiterers provide lemons, the Cutlers plastic forks, the Glovers white gloves worn by each runner, and the Poulters the eggs essential in the all-important making of the pancakes.
Taking place the Saturday before Pancake Day, on Saturday 14th February, Greenwich Market Pancake Races has medals in several categories including best market trader team, lovers race - given it is Valentine's Day -and best fancy dress. Anyone can enter and competitors are encouraged to dress up and help raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
All participants need for The Great Spitalfields Pancake Race, when pancake enthusiasts leg it down Dray Walk at The Old Truman Brewery on Brick Lane, is a team of four spirited souls dressed up in wacky costumes and armed with a frying pan, pancakes are provided. It's great fun, held for a worthy cause - to raise money for London's Air Ambulance which is currently raising funds to buy a second helicopter.
