LAS VEGAS, NV, March 09, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The office of Dr. James B. Polley has achieved certification by the Nevada Board of Dental Examiners to perform general anesthesia. This allows the office to offer general anesthesia during procedures where patients may benefit, such as dental implants, sinus lifts, and bone grafting.
General anesthesia is very safe when performed properly on appropriate candidates, but if performed without adequate safeguards, there are serious risks. In general anesthesia, a patient is unable to breathe on their own and without artificial respiration, a patient may experience oxygen shortage, potentially resulting in brain damage and even death.
In order to meet the state standards for general anesthesia safety, Dr. Polley's office added an AED (automated external defibrillator) and other equipment necessary for maintaining a patient under the effects of general anesthesia.
The staff was also tested in many aspects of caring for patients during general anesthesia, including their knowledge of how to deal with the 16 most common and most serious complications related to anesthesia. In addition to the normal staff, when general anesthesia is being used, Dr. Polley will be accompanied by a dental anesthesiologist, whose sole job is to put the patient into an anesthetized state and monitor their condition.
"Patient safety and quality care have always been two of our most important commitments," said Dr. Polley. "This certification shows again that we honor our commitments to our patients. We want to make sure we can offer all patients the best possible care, and for some patients in some procedures, that means general anesthesia."
