James J. Salz, MD, Honored by Worldwide Registry for Excellence in Refractive Eye Surgery

A world-renowned refractive surgery specialist, Dr. Salz has carried out a complete range of refractive surgical procedures. He has also appeared on the Today Show, CNN, PBS and TV news programs, and has been quoted extensively in major ophthalmology publications in the U.S. and abroad. He has garnered a reputation of distinction and prominence as an international lecturer and educator, and he performed his first refractive surgery procedure, radial keratotomy, in 1980 and was one of only nine U.S. surgeons to participate in the Prospective Evaluation of Radial Keratotomy (PERK) study.

Dr. Salz has amassed a wealth of knowledge and experience over the course of an illustrious career that spans more than 45 years. Specializing in laser vision correction and refractive eye surgery, he adeptly and knowledgeably performs these procedures, conducts ground-breaking research, and teaches others; he also conducts lectures. Dr. Salz began doing research and procedures that others only did much later. He worked on 10 clinical trials and FDA studies.

Upon reflecting on a rewarding career, Dr. Salz feels that he has been able to thrive professionally due to his growing passion for what it is that he does. He became involved in his profession after being influenced at the age of 9 by an eye doctor that he saw for his astigmatism. He was absolutely fascinated by the equipment that his physician used, and it inspired him to follow a professional path in health care.

Dr. Salz received an MD from Duke University, and later became Board Certified in Ophthalmology. He was recently inducted into Worldwide Registry and also maintains affiliation with the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is a former president of the International Society of Refractive Surgeons, a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, the Los Angeles Society of Ophthalmology, and the California Academy of Eye Surgeons. He received the prestigious Barraquer Award (1994) and the Lifetime Achievement Award (2003) for his Continuing Contributions to Refractive Surgery from the International Society of Refractive Surgeons. He also earned a Senior Honor Award (1997) and the Secretariat Award (2007) from the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Salz has been listed in Castle Connolly's Top Doctors since 2004. He champions such worthy causes as the Knights of Columbus, in West Los Angeles where he chairs their annual charity golf tournament. For the last four years he has performed mission cataract surgery in Mexico with Liga, Flying Doctors of Mercy.
