MyPhillyLawyer to Represent Area Women in Amtrak Derailment

Our Philadelphia law firm will represent a client injured in the train accident that occurred on Monday when a northbound Amtrak train hit an oversize truck stalled on the track.

PHILADELPHIA, PA, March 12, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Philadelphia law firm of Silvers, Langsam & Weitzman, PC, announces that it will represent a passenger who was traveling on the Amtrak train that derailed when it hit a truck stuck on the tracks. The Philadelphia-area woman was thrown from her seat into the aisle by the impact. She suffered head and back injuries as a result. The train was scheduled to stop at the 30th Street Station in center city Philadelphia.

The accident happened in Halifax County, North Carolina, near the Virginia-North Carolina state line, when an oversize tractor-trailer was unable to make a sharp turn from the track onto the roadway because of the length of the trailer. Passengers report that they felt no reduction in speed. They also apparently heard no warnings on the PA system. Some mentioned that they had not heard the train whistle sound.

Although no one was killed in this accident, at least 60 people were taken to area hospitals by ambulance and bus for a variety of injuries, both serious and minor. Federal railroad statistics show that there were 827 fatalities and 8,339 injuries on railroads in the United States last year. There were at least 120 deaths related to Amtrak operations in 2014.

The train, known as the Carolinian, was en route from Charlotte, NC to New York City, carrying more than 200 passengers and eight crew members when it hit the truck at 69 MPH after rounding a curve near the intersection of US Highway 301 and NC Highway 903. The 164 foot-long truck was travelling with police escorts, as required by Department of Transportation rules for oversize trucks.

Passengers injured in this and in any other train accident may be able to obtain compensation for their medical expenses and injuries. It is important to speak with an experienced accident injury attorney to find out about the legal options available.
