DETROIT, MI, March 13, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Steven N. Kalkanis, MD, of Henry Ford Hospital, has been recognized for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in neurosurgery.
Throughout his career, Dr. Kalkanis has set himself apart in a number of medical disciplines and subspecialties, including intracranial, general and stereotactic neurosurgery, spinal cord tumors, adult cervical and lumbar spine disease. On a daily basis, he is responsible for overseeing clinical trials and outcome studies for brain tumor patients, utilizing targeting cell-based therapy for the treatment of malignant gliomas, supervising gene therapy and stem cell delivery for novel brain cancer therapies and managing survival-associated genetic studies for the development of personalized medicine protocols for brain tumor patients.
In May 2014, Dr. Kalkanis was appointed chair of the Department of Neurosurgery and co-director of the Neuroscience Institute at Henry Ford Hospital. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Kalkanis directs a translational research laboratory investigating novel, targeted, personalized medicine approaches for the treatment of brain tumors. A nationally recognized expert in brain tumor surgery, Dr. Kalkanis authored the definitive set of national guidelines for the multidisciplinary treatment of brain metastases in 2010.
Recently, Dr. Kalkanis was selected by his peers to serve as the secretary/treasurer and president-elect of the Joint Section on Tumors, the internationally recognized organization focusing on neurosurgical oncology and jointly sponsored by the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS). He has also been selected to serve as the Scientific Program Chair for the annual meeting of CNS, which is the largest neurosurgical association in the world. He is the vice chair of the Joint Guidelines Committee representing organized neurosurgery and a former president of the Michigan Association of Neurological Surgeons.
Looking back, Dr. Kalkanis attributes his success to his passion for the field and helping others. He became involved in his profession because he was always fascinated by the human body and while on rotation in medical school, he shadowed a neurosurgeon, who operated on a young boy that had a brain tumor which was impairing his vision. He went to Henry Ford Hospital in 2004 and has held several leadership roles, including vice chair for operations in the department of neurosurgery, co-director of the Hermelin Brain Tumor Center and co-director of the intra-operative MRI surgical program.
Dr. Kalkanis completed residency training through Massachusetts General Hospital, having earned an MD from Harvard University in 1997, and an undergraduate degree from Harvard University, with highest honors in 1993. He was recently inducted into Worldwide Registry and also maintains affiliation with the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the executive board of the National Neurosurgical Guidelines Committee of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Michigan Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Hermelin Brain Tumor Center. In recognition of his achievements to date, he has been honored as one of Michigan's Top Doctors by Hour Magazine, and has received a National First-Place Research Award from the American College of Surgeons and Congress of Neurological Surgeons.
