Designs of the Year 2015

Mushroom-based modelling material and the Moocall sensor are shortlisted

LONDON, ENGLAND, March 20, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Google's self-driving car, Frank Gehry's Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris and Asif Kahn's Sochi Olympic Megafaces are just some of the high-profile projects to be represented in the Designs of the Year exhibition which opens at the Design Museum on 25th March 2015, one of the must-see events in London beginning in March.

The 'Oscars of the design world', the Designs of the Year exhibition hand picks 76 of the best designs split into six categories: architecture, digital, fashion, graphics, product and transport.

In 2015, shortlisted nominations, chosen by a high-profile judging panel of Anish Kapoor, Tom Lloyd and Farshid Moussavi, Architect and Professor at Harvard GSD, include global stars like Herzog & de Meuron, Frank Gehry and Raf Simons alongside smaller startups and student initiatives.

A strong theme for 2015 is the use of new technologies to solve real-life problems through projects like the world's first lab for 3D printing prosthetic limbs, and the Moocall sensor which texts the farmer when calving is about to begin.

Sustainable design initiatives also feature strongly with innovative ideas such as an air-purifying billboard designed by the University of Engineering and Technology of Peru and a green city runaround from F1 designer Gordon Murray Design among the nominees.

In London, Irish architects O'Donnell + Tuomey's design for the Saw Swee Hock Student Centre at the London School of Economics, winner of the RIBA London Building of the Year Award which officially opened on 24th October 2014, is also included in the exhibition. The site specific brick clad sculptural building, awarded, is "an object lesson in mobilising the limitations of a site into a startlingly original building", according to the Royal Institute of British Architects.

All of the nominees will be hoping to join the illustrious list of past winners - GOV.UK, the UK Government website by GDS, the Plumen lightbulb, a folding plug, the 2012 Olympic Torch and last year's winner, the Heydar Aliyev Center Baku, Azerbaijan, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects.

The Designs of the Year category winners are announced on Monday 4th May and the overall winner is revealed at an event at the Design Museum on Thursday 4th June 2015.
