Mr. Malik is the Office Managing Partner of the Calgary office and has 17 years of experience in law. His areas of expertise include tax matters relating to private and public equity and debt financing transactions, resource flow-through financing structures, the use of partnerships and trusts as alternative business vehicles, and the structuring of cross-border investments. Rated AV Preeminent by Martindale-Hubbell, Mr. Malik also handles dispute resolutions with taxation authorities. Prior to becoming a lawyer, he worked as a tax manager for two national chartered accounting firms and has taught for the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta. Mr. Malik also lectured in various tax seminars, including with respect to tax planning for private corporations and their shareholders, amendments to the Canada-U.S. Tax Treaty, tax structuring for cross-border investments, the taxable Canadian property rules, and the safe practice of taxation and tax adviser negligence.
Demonstrating his expertise, Mr. Malik is also certified by the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants and the Institutes of Chartered Accountants of Alberta and of Ontario. While in law school, he also earned awards for excellence in corporate taxation.
Mr. Malik received a Juris Doctor from the University of Calgary and a master's degree in accounting from the University of Waterloo. He also received a bachelor's degree in chartered accountancy studies, with honors, from the University of Waterloo. Mr. Malik was recently inducted into Worldwide Registry and also maintains affiliations with the Canadian Bar Association, the Law Society of Alberta, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario, the Canadian Tax Foundation and the Canadian Petroleum Tax Society.
In the coming years, Mr. Malik expects to expand his practice in cross-border transactions, both the tax and business elements and to work more closely with other international attorneys.
