Legendary Nancy Cartoonist Guy Gilchrist Brings Litter Awareness To Smith County Schools On May 6-7 In Partnership With TDOT

    NASHVILLE, TN, May 06, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Award winning internationally syndicated cartoonist and author of the iconic Nancy comic strip, Guy Gilchrist in partnership with the Tennessee Department of Transportation will be appearing at six Smith County, Tennessee schools to teach students about litter awareness and recycling. Gilchrist will teach children the harm in littering, in a fun format that will also allow the students the opportunity to draw with him. He also stresses in his talk to the students the importance of never giving up on their dreams. The program is a fun interactive strategy to teach children early the importance of not polluting.

"I am honored to be taking part in this educational program at the Smith County schools," said Guy Gilchrist. "Teaching children at an early age the importance of our environment is essential. Partnering with TDOT, Nancy brings the lesson to children in a way that they can understand and also enjoy without feeling lectured at."

Gilchrist is also working with Keep Tennessee Beautiful on an illustrated, full color hardbound book for children, featuring the iconic cartoon characters Nancy and Sluggo. The subject of the book will center around Keep Tennessee Beautiful's mission statement: to educate and rally Tennesseans to take responsibility for improving their community environments.

Guy Gilchrist at the age of 24, he was hand-selected to create Jim Henson's Muppets Comic Strip which was printed worldwide in 660-plus newspapers daily from 1981 to 1986. Throughout the years, he has set his hand to such notable cartoons as Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, Fraggle Rock and The Pink Panther and was instrumental in the creation of The Muppet Babies. He resides in Nashville, Tennessee.

Syndicated internationally in 80 countries and some 400 newspapers, Nancy has a viewership of 57 million readers around the world. And as fans of the the comic strip know, Nancy resides in the fictional town of Three Rocks with her Aunt Fritzi and friend, Sluggo. Gilchrist took over the Nancy comic strip in 1995. In 2013 he unveiled a one-of-a-kind exhibit, Nancy Loves Nashville, at the Nashville International Airport that revealed the location of Three Rocks as a suburb just outside of Nashville.
