It is important for brands to be active on social media platforms and to maximize their potential they must follow the three key rules: Engage, Authenticity and Timing.
1. Not properly vetting and supervising social media managers
Social media now drives almost a third of all referral traffic, therefore it's absolutely critical that the individuals responsible for driving these referrals are up to the job.
While mistakes can't always be avoided, inexperienced, untrained or poorly supervised social media managers having free reign of a company's social media accounts can be fatal.
2. Not responding appropriately to negative feedback
Negative feedback is inevitable, every company gets it. Brands can either choose to ignore it, fight back or take it in their stride. How they respond is a reflection of their brand's values. The most successful companies respond thoughtfully and promptly to negative comments, and use them as opportunities to showcase their commitment to customer service.
3. Buying likes or followers
Consumers respond to authenticity. By taking the time to engage with followers and organically grow will have a more positive effect on a company's social media presence. Buying fans or followers can actually hurt brands by decreasing overall reach.
Fake fans will never interact or engage, therefore signalling to Facebook that a brand's content isn't interesting or valuable to its audience. As a result posts decrease in reach and visibility and brands could also find their account being closed, banned or deleted should Facebook find out.
4. Being repetitive
Posting the same types of content over and over can make a brand look boring and repetitive. Companies should change things up by posting a wide variety of content. Duplicate content leaves followers disengaged.
5. Promoting products constantly
Although these sites provide an excellent marketing platform, there is a time and place for a brand to promote its business or products.
Social selling is all about building relationships and trust that will ultimately lead to sales and companies shouldn't abuse the platform by using it as a billboard or commercial. They should follow the 80/20 principle: post engaging, high-value content 80 percent of the time and promote products no more than 20 percent of the time.
6. Inconsistency in use and messaging
To get the most out of social media, brands must have a schedule for when and how often they post. Their profile and cover photos should portray what the brand is about. The best way to be consistent is to have a strategy in place.
7. Generic responses
Having prepared responses for commonly asked questions can save time, however brands should use them with caution and be mindful that criticisms, negative feedback and specific questions should receive thoughtful and personalized responses.
8. Social media overkill
There are multiple social media sites out there, however just because a social networking site exists doesn't mean brands have to use it. Committing to too many networks can mean they're not using any of them effectively.
Brands should choose the top three to five sites that are the best match for their target market.
