VANCOUVER, BC, May 07, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Locally owned internet start-up EarthquakeKit.ca has announced plans to take its online store door-to-door across the BC Lower Mainland in an effort to educate households on the importance of having an earthquake kit in every home. Every time there is an earthquake in BC the sale of emergency kits skyrocket, but company founder Karl Lundgren says "it's not good enough to wait for the next one to peak people's interest as the next one could be The Big One and then we are too late". We've all heard about 'The Big One' that's expected to hit the region at some point in the future, so the question is why are so many of us unprepared for something that most experts agree is inevitable.
"When I ask people out there in the community if they have an earthquake kit in their home, the answer is mostly "no". That's like going boating without a life jacket when you don't know how to swim. It's crazy, you just wouldn't do it. Based on my conversations with people I'd estimate that less than a third of homes in the Lower Mainland have an earthquake kit and that's terrifying. By going straight to people's doors and offering hand delivery of their kits we are resolving the most common barriers that prevent people from having a kit in their home," said Lundgren.
Part of the door-to-door initiative will be to survey the percentage of homes that have a kit and to provide information to those that wish to build their own kits rather than buy it through EarthquakeKit.ca. The company plans to share their statistics and work closely with Emergency Services in communities across the Lower Mainland. "Our goal is to put an earthquake kit in every home and this will take tremendous cooperation from everyone in the community. I see this less as a business and more as a movement. A movement to shake people out of apathy," said Lundgren.
