CARLSBAD, NM, May 14, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Last week, Jay Jenkins, President of the Carlsbad Department of Development, toured the Xcel Energy Monticello Nuclear Power Plant in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The visit was part of a weeklong tour across the United States with New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez and the New Mexico Amigos, which included local businessman Bobby Bowen.
"The trip couldn't have come at a better time," Jenkins stated, as the Eddy Lea Alliance chaired by local nuclear advocate John Heaton announced in an agreement last week with Holtec International to build a temporary storage site in Southeast New Mexico for spent nuclear fuel. "For a layperson like myself regarding nuclear, it is one thing to talk about the need and another to see firsthand the spent nuclear fuel storage on site at the Monticello plant. They are crowded for room and having to try and expand their storage area. It was clear that they need offsite storage sooner rather than later."
During the visit Jenkins had the opportunity to visit with the CEO of Xcel Energy, Ben Fowke, III.
