Randi Kopf, RN, MS, JD, Honored for 25 Years of Excellence in Health Care Law

    ROCKVILLE, MD, May 14, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Randi Kopf, RN, MS, JD, has been recognized for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in practicing law for over 25 years. Ms. Kopf is recognized as a professional resource for matters pertaining to HIPAA and eHealth due to her many years of clinical, legal and technology practice. She has authored several books, multiple professional journal articles including the ABA's Health Lawyer, served as editor and author for the Journal of Nursing Law, other professional publications, and served as a Board Member, Section Chair, Officer and leader in her professional organizations. She has received many recognitions and awards for her work and service.

Ms. Kopf established Kopf HealthLaw, LLC, a health law practice, in 1994, after clinically practicing as a nationally Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP/C), teaching at Adelphi University School of Nursing, Georgetown, and the University of Maryland Schools of Nursing, being invited as a speaker for national and local professional organizations and working as a health lawyer. At the outset of her legal career, she did not intend to go into the private practice of law, however, as she began to work as a health lawyer representing primarily physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, medical practice groups and medical associations, she began to realize she could do more for clients as a nurse attorney than as an FNP.

In her law practice, Randi Kopf enjoys helping doctors and nurses practice the medicine or nursing they want within the law. She advises her clients about HIPAA, best practices, eHealth and other health care laws, as well as gives nationwide speaking presentations on medical, legal and technology topics. Additionally, she serves as a general and special health counsel for individual physicians, nurses, medical groups, national and regional medical and allied health associations, and other health care-related professionals and entities locally and across the country. She assists clients with corporate matters such as incorporation of new practices, practice structuring, medical practice acquisition and sale, employee agreements, employment and patient related matters, Electronic Health Records (EHR), HIPAA, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and health insurance matters. She offers legal advice concerning HIPAA and eHealth practice matters (practical implementation for compliance, electronic security issues, development and compliance of professional websites, the electronic practice of medicine, review of health care technology contracts (EHR, eRx, Clouds & vendors), review and negotiation of employment and managed care contracts and social media use in a health care practice.

Ms. Kopf provides legal advice pertaining to the multiple aspects of the business of running a healthcare practice. She represents both employers and employees, individual practitioners, group practices and professional associations to health care professionals who are just starting out in practice, are in transition, or have been in practice for many years and want to bring on new practitioners or are considering a practice exit strategy. Ms. Kopf takes pride in monitoring and evaluating federal and state health care legislation and its impact on the health care providers to be able to provide advice to her clients that helps them be successful in their ventures.

After earning a Bachelor of Science in biology from Cornell University, Ms. Kopf earned a Bachelor of Science in nursing and then a Master of Science as a family nurse practitioner from SUNY Stonybrook. She earned a Juris Doctor with a focus in Health Care Law, from the University of Maryland's Francis King Carey School of Law. She is licensed to practice law in Maryland, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Supreme Court. She is a member of the American Health Lawyers Association, the Bar Associations of Maryland, Montgomery County, and Washington, D.C., The American Association of Nurse Attorneys (TAANA), Chesapeake Nurse Attorneys Inc., and The Professional Association of Health Care Office Management (PAHCOM).

In her 26 years practicing law and over 30 years as a nurse practitioner, Ms. Kopf has been the recipient of a bevy of awards such as the Cornell University Alumni Award for Outstanding Volunteerism, the National Distinguished Service Award in Nursing, published in Who's Who in American Nursing, American Women, and American Medicine and Health Care. She has been recognized by her peers for her professional work, including from TAANA - the Cynthia Northrop Distinguished Service Award (twice), the Outstanding Health Law, Legislation and Compliance Section Member, the Most Outstanding Chapter Award (twice as President, Chesapeake Nurse Attorneys, Inc.). Ms. Kopf currently serves as the President of the TAANA Foundation and served two terms on the TAANA Board of Directors and as an officer. Randi Kopf served as Chair of the Health Law Section for the Bar Association of Montgomery County, Maryland. Most recently, she has been appointed to serve on the Charles E. Smith Life Communities Quality Improvement Committee in Rockville, Maryland.
