ATLANTA, GA, May 22, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In February, the coffee world crowned a new barista as the United States champion. The contestant -- who previously had a three year run as the second runner up -- will represent the country at the 2015 World Barista Championship in Seattle, Washington, from April 9th - 12th. As the winner of the United States Barista Championship (USBC), Charles Babinski joins his business partner, Kyle Glanville -- himself a U.S. national champion seven years ago in 2008 -- in bringing home the most coveted prize in the world of specialty coffee.
Held over the course of three days, the event began with 36 of the best baristas from across the United States. This field of 36 was then whittled down first to 18, then six before the champion was named. As co-owner of Go Get Em Tiger and G&B Coffee -- both popular coffeehouses in Los Angeles -- Babinski has been competing in the USBC since 2008. He also put forth a respectable showing for the Southwest Regional Barista Championship (SWRBC) the last several years, including first place in both 2014 and 2015.
While many of the competitors at the USBC use their time in the spotlight to weave tales of imagination and excitement surrounding specialty coffee -- complete with accompanying dialog and the stunning finale of their signature drink -- Babinski focused on those skills that he has honed while working on the floor at his two bustling cafes.
"I want to extend a congratulations to Charles Babinksi," says John Martinez, owner of J. Martinez & Company. "It takes great skill and knowledge to be a champion barista. Thank you for celebrating the world's finest coffee in your craft."
In an atmosphere where Babinski had to carve out time to fix each customer's drink to their specifications while also making them feel like they are special, he honed in on time-saving apparatus and automation. Things such as pre-ground espresso and batch-brewed coffee as well as treats like a grapefruit reduction, juniper syrup and pine tree honey prove that Babinski has that rare combination of expertise, adventurousness and attention to detail that define a winner.
