Dr. John Elefteriades was selected as one of the 10 best doctors in America by Men's Health magazine.
NEW HAVEN, CT, May 15, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. John Elefteriades, William W.L. Glenn Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Yale University and Director of the Aortic Institute at Yale-New Haven Hospital, has been recognized for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in cardiothoracic medicine.
Dr. Elefteriades has 32 years of surgical experience and is among the most clinically active academic surgeons in the nation. He has established himself as an expert in the performance of adult cardiac and thoracic surgery. He also has extensive knowledge in the areas of coronary artery bypass grafting, left ventricular aneurysmectomy and artificial heart implantation. Dr. Elefteriades is a recognized authority in interventions for the failing left ventricle of the heart. His daily responsibilities include patient care, research and administrative duties. He directs the Aortic Institute at Yale, one of the nation's largest facilities for treatment of the dilated thoracic aorta. Furthermore, he conducts laboratory research in new techniques of heart transplantation and works with Celera Diagnostics to identify the genetic mutations responsible for thoracic aortic aneurysms. The atomic and physiologic beauty of the heart, in addition to its medical challenges, prompted him to pursue a career in this field.
Dr. Elefteriades' research work into brain and spinal cord protection via hypothermia has been supported by multiple grants from the National Science Foundation. He is a frequently requested international lecturer, visiting professor and guest surgeon. In 2005, he was selected to deliver a lecture for the Leadership in Biomedicine Series at the Yale University School of Medicine. He was also selected as one of the 10 best doctors in America by Men's Health magazine. He was additionally featured in dozens of print, radio, and television presentations.
Dr. Elefteriades graduated magna cum laude with triple emphasis in Physics, French and Psychology from Yale University. He graduated also from Yale University School of Medicine. In addition, he completed training in general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery at Yale University. He earned certification through the American Board of Surgery in 1982 and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery in 1985. He was re-certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery in 2013. A recent inductee into the Worldwide Registry, Dr. Elefteriades also maintains affiliation with the American Association for Thoracic Surgery and the Society for Thoracic Surgeons and the New England Surgical Society. He is the former president of the Connecticut Chapter of the American College of Cardiology and member of the National Board of Governors of the American College of Cardiology. He is the former President of the International College of Angiology. Dr. Elefteriades serves on the editorial board for the American Journal of Cardiology, the Journal of Cardiac Surgery, the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, and Cardiology. He is also the editor-in-chief for the journal AORTA. Additionally, he has been a part of the Thoracic Surgery Directors Association for 16 years.
