Returning to the Corcoran after an exclusive world tour, The American Evolution exhibition goes beyond a traditional chronological survey of American art by looking at the objects through the framework of five broad themes that are central to the American experience. Included in the long-awaited exhibition are outstanding Hudson River School paintings, such as Thomas Cole's Departure and Return (1837); landscapes and figure paintings by major Impressionists like Mary Cassatt and John Singer Sargent; early 20th-century realism and abstraction; and post-war paintings by Joan Mitchell, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, and others.
