New England Compounding Center disregarded the lives of consumers in pursuit of profits. Now these consumers have a chance to move forward with their lives.
SPRINGFIELD, MA, May 27, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Judge Henry J. Boroff approved today a $200 million settlement as part of the bankruptcy proceedings filed by New England Compounding Center (NECC), a now-defunct company that is the subject of litigation revolving around its production of tainted steroid injections used to alleviate back and joint pain.
At least 64 people died and more than 750 people were injured after being injected with the tainted steroids in medical facilities across 20 states, including Florida. Fungal meningitis can result in seizures, brain damage and death if left untreated.
Melvin B. Wright, with the law firm of Colling Gilbert Wright & Carter in Orlando, Fla., represents 50 clients in litigation against NECC. He was also one of eight attorneys nationwide who sat on the Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors in the federal bankruptcy court, which reviewed and ultimately approved the $200 million settlement.
"With this settlement, the hundreds of people who suffered and died from fungal meningitis will have access to at least some measure of the compensation they deserve," Wright said. "We consider this a landmark moment for our firm and for everyone involved in this case. It was a privilege to work with the attorneys and professionals who collaborated with us in reaching the resolution of this most tragic and complex case of national proportions."
Wright also co-chaired the Florida subcommittee of the national Plaintiffs' Steering Committee created to guide legal action against NECC across the multiple districts in which clients suffered injury.
"New England Compounding Center disregarded the lives of consumers in pursuit of profits," Wright said. "Now these consumers have a chance to move forward with their lives."
