NEW YORK, NY, June 04, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Psychologist Dr. Danielle Sheypuk, respected worldwide as an advocate on behalf of people with disabilities, will debut online in her first TEDx Talk, June 11, 2015, sponsored by the Athena Center for Leadership Studies at Barnard College, Columbia University in New York.
"In this TEDx," reads the text on the talk's Thunderclap site, "Dr. Danielle Sheypuk gets real about sex and disability, unabashedly exploring sexual satisfaction writ large. She encourages curiosity and invites you to shed your preconceived notions of sexual norms in favor of a new reality that just might pique your interest."
Titled "Every Body: Glamour, Dateability, Sexuality & Disability," Sheypuk's talk takes off from her personal experiences of love, dating, romance and sex. From there, she extrapolates to a much larger set of issues, regarding social mores, ingrained stereotypes, and promotion of negative images of the disabled, which are inculcated and amplified by entertainment media and pop culture.
The former Ms. Wheelchair New York, Sheypuk has been a strong critic of how the established fashion and beauty industries, and the mass media, shun the mega-billion dollar markets represented by people with disabilities. Sheypuk also gained international fame as a groundbreaking runway model during New York Fashion Week in February 2014, deemed by some as a "Rosa Parks moment" on behalf of women living with disabilities.
"People with physical disabilities are largely left out of the dating picture," says Sheypuk. "Somewhere, somehow, it was decided to factor out OUR drive for sex and the desire to be in a romantic relationship. In fact, society, the media included, ignores the fact that people with disabilities have the same emotional needs and desires regarding relationships and sex as everyone else. Is this injustice born out of the concept of "the Poster Child" and his or her duty to induce pity to raise money?"
"The more our bodies deviate from the ultimate sex icon," Sheypuk continues, "the more de-sexualized we become, the more taboo the topic, the more damaging the consequences."
"It's not that people with disabilities are not sexy." Sheypuk concludes. "It's that they have not been told that they are - yet."
"Dr. Sheypuk is a genuine pioneer in the fight to acknowledge the mainstream desires and aspirations of people with disabilities," said Michelle Santucci, Associate for Media, Events and Promotions at Tranquility49 PR. "She is a bridge-builder who turns stereotypes on their heads with her zest for life and her belief in all its possibilities. We salute her and encourage everyone to preview Danielle's TEDx Talk on YouTube."
Among other pursuits, Dr. Sheypuk is also a fashion model for the online lifestyle clothing distributor The Tomboy Shop, an expert commentator for the women's online magazine SheKnows.com, and also conducts a private practice employing Skype-based therapies, designed to reach out especially to those who are homebound due to physical disabilities.
