Mr. Heath earned a bachelor's degree in political science and history from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and subsequently went on to receive a JD from Loyola University Chicago Law School in 1984. After law school, he became licensed in Illinois and worked as a Cook County Assistant State's Attorney from 1984 through 1987. While with the State Attorney's office, Mr. Heath served as counsel on the case of Patterson v Illinois, which was resolved successfully before the United States Supreme Court. Patterson is the seminal case regarding the waiver of the sixth amendment right to counsel at post-indictment interrogation. Mr. Heath left the State Attorney's office in 1987 to join Wildman, Harrold, Allen & Dixon, a civil litigation firm. While working at Wildman, Mr. Heath handled insurance defense cases, including medical malpractice cases, as well as insurance coverage disputes and appeals. In 1990, Mr. Heath began working on plaintiff's personal injury cases and plaintiff's medical malpractice cases with Terrence K. Hegarty & Associates, Ltd. In 1998, he became partners with Mr. Hegarty in the firm Hegarty & Heath. As a plaintiff's personal injury attorney, Mr. Heath successfully took several cases from the trial court up to the Supreme Court of Illinois and made an important impact of the development of personal injury law in the state of Illinois. Mr. Heath has handled at least 15 cases that have gone to the Illinois Appellate Court and at least eight cases that have reached the Illinois Supreme Court.
