PHOENIX, AZ, July 28, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Every year, millions of kids enter their first year of college with hopes of becoming an attorney. These ambitious students no doubt have a whirlwind of questions swirling in their mind: what's the right major? What kind of grades do I need? How do I choose the right school? Hastings and Hastings, Arizona's discount accident lawyers, are pleased to share some helpful tips for these young, prospective attorneys.
"The best advice an undergraduate with law school ambitions can heed is to study something they enjoy. Statistically, students who study something they enjoy score higher grades, and enjoy a better college experience," said David Hastings, owner and attorney at Hastings and Hastings.
The aforementioned advice is spot on. The only major undergraduates should steer clear of is a pre-law. These students score the lowest on the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT), and have weaker job prospects post-graduation then most majors. Interestingly, the highest LSAT scores come from classics majors (Latin and Greek), with Physics majors not far behind. Many law students will gravitate towards the humanities, and this will no doubt prepare you for the LSAT and the study of law. Statistically, Philosophy and English majors do the best on the LSAT. But if one is inclined to science, they should not shy away from the pursuit of the study. These undergrads receive an automatic boost to their GPA by the law school admission counsel, enjoy a broader array of employment opportunities post-graduation, and qualify to sit for the patent bar.
Aspiring attorneys should keep their grades high. The most important aspect of the law school admissions process is the LSAT, but a high GPA can lead to scholarship offers, mitigate a low LSAT score, or serve as a tie breaker if necessary.
When it comes time to select a law school, money will no doubt play a factor. Indeed, full tuition scholarships will be granted to students who can distinguish themselves from the pack. What's more, where you intend to practice is important. At regional universities, most law grads remain in the state they matriculated from. However, attending an elite university (Harvard, Yale, Stanford) carries pull in all fifty states. What's more, these schools will grant students access to the highest paying starting salaries, clocking in at $160,000 for average pay.
