We view changes in patient needs, like the rise in cases of DLS, as an opportunity to expand our practice so we can better serve the community.
PLANO, TX, July 20, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- North Texas eye surgery center Brooks Eye Associates announced Friday that Dr. Dain Brooks is now accepting patients suffering from dysfunctional lens syndrome (DLS). Patients with this condition tend to experience progressive difficulty with near vision as well as other visual aberrations resulting from opacity of the lens.
"Dysfunctional lens syndrome most often occurs in patients between the ages of 45 and 55," Dr. Brooks said. "It is commonly diagnosed when patients undergo an evaluation for LASIK surgery or when patients who have previously undergone LASIK believe the surgery has 'worn off.'"
Brooks Eye Associates has adopted iTrace equipment to diagnose DLS. Manufactured by Tracey Technologies, the iTrace device projects a series of laser lights into the eye and measures the effect of aberrations. The eye surgeon can evaluate these data to make a diagnosis and help patients better understand the health and condition of their eye, as well as the treatment necessary to restore functional vision.
Dr. Brooks said that refractive lens exchange is "the treatment of choice" for patients who visit his ophthalmology practice suffering from DLS. During refractive lens exchange, the eye's natural lens is removed and replaced with a premium artificial lens.
"Refractive lens exchange treats the root cause of the vision issues caused by dysfunctional lens syndrome," Dr. Brooks said. "It also has the advantage of eliminating any future incidence of cataracts."
Unlike cataract surgery, refractive lens exchange for DLS is not considered by insurers to be a medical necessity, which means patients will have to pay for treatment out of pocket. However, Dr. Brooks said relieving DLS is "a lifestyle decision that has long-term positive results," including money and time savings for patients considering LASIK who would otherwise need cataract surgery at a later date.
"No matter what type of vision enhancement our patients need, our goal is to provide results that address the unique characteristics of their case," he said. "We view changes in patient needs, like the rise in cases of DLS, as an opportunity to expand our practice so we can better serve the community."
