Thomas Amick, former president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Dendreon, has been named a Worldwide Branding Executive of the Year in Biotechnology. Over his four-decade career, Mr. Amick has become skilled in developing and managing emerging companies. As the president and CEO of Dendreon, he was tasked with providing biotechnology services and handling innovative business designs, as well as networking and planning strategic initiatives for his clients.
Mr. Amick has a wealth of experience in biotechnology. Prior to joining Dendreon, he worked for more than 30 years with Johnson & Johnson. During his tenure, he was instrumental in developing the oncology growth factor market, which became the No. 1 product within all of Johnson & Johnson. With the growth factor success, he was influential in the development of the company's oncology franchise. In 1999, Mr. Amick was named president of Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceuticals in Canada, assuming sole leadership over all the companies' business franchises within the country. In 2001, Mr. Amick became president of the Johnson & Johnson oncology franchise for all of Western Europe. In both of these senior leadership roles, he was instrumental in driving the development of the pharmaceutical business within these countries.
After retiring from Johnson & Johnson in 2004, Mr. Amick formed a consulting business where he comprised the leadership board of several venture capitalist groups. In 2005, he was asked to join Aldagen, a stem cell research company, where he served as president and CEO until 2010. During his tenure at Aldagen, Mr. Amick also served as chairman of the board for Discovery Laboratories, a company focused on orphan drug development in pediatric patients and in 2010, he became the CEO of Discovery Laboratories. In 2014, the board of directors for Dendreon contacted Mr. Amick, asking him if he would shoulder the task of turning around their Provenge business and get the company to profitability. In January 2015, Dendreon announced that for the first time in their 5 year existence the company had become profitable.
Mr. Amick has vast experience in business management and administration, leadership and instituting innovative biotech strategies. He welcomes challenges and is open to any obstacle. He feels his greatest success comes from finding solutions for problem areas within troubled companies and he receives his greatest reward by seeing emerging companies achieve their strategic initiatives.
Mr. Amick received a Bachelor of Business Administration from Elon University, as well as completed executive coursework at Kellogg School of Management, Harvard Business School and Darden School of Business.
