A caring, compassionate physician with more than three decades of experience in the field, Dr. Stern is skilled in treating patients with chronic kidney diseases and metabolic disorders including diabetes mellitus, kidney stone disease, renal osteodystrophy and hyperparathyroidism. He is an expert in the nutritional, conservative management of chronic kidney disease as well as in the application of dialysis therapies, both conventional and research oriented. His particular specialty is in home dialysis treatments for both hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. He also has additional expertise in managing patients with both kidney and pancreas transplants.
In becoming a physician, Dr. Stern has been able to combine his research interest in human physiology with his desire to help people. Keeping up with the latest in medical technology, he helped to establish the first chronic home dialysis centers in both New York at CUMC and in Chengdu, China at a public hospital. Dr. Stern was awarded by the city of Chengdu and the Province of Sichuan China with the Jinsha Friendship public service award for his work in training physicians and nurses throughout the province in the art of home peritoneal dialysis. He was also awarded an honorary professorship at the Southwest Jiao Tong Medical College to continue his training of physicians in the application of home dialysis and nutrition therapy.
Certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology, Dr. Stern received an MD from New York Medical College in 1975. He was honored with a Samuel Spiegel Award (graduating with the highest academic rank), and an induction into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He completed internship and residency at the Jacobi Medical Center division of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, fellowships in Nephrology at both Yale-New Haven Hospital in 1981 and Montefiore Hospital in 1979. Dr. Stern is a member of the American Society of Nephrology, the National Kidney Foundation, the International Society of Nephrology, the International Society of for Peritoneal Dialysis, the American College of Physicians, and the New York Society of Nephrology. He is a fellow of the American Society of Nephrology, American College of Physicians and the National Kidney Foundation. He also serves on the medical advisory board for the National Kidney Foundation of New York. He was named one of America's Top Doctors by Castle Connolly, as well as one of New York Magazine's Best Doctors.
