SCOTTSDALE, AZ, August 09, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A panel of prestigious breast surgery specialists that included Dr. Robert Cohen (www.robertcohenmd.com), a Scottsdale plastic surgeon, spoke recently about an innovative cohesive silicone gel breast implant they say helps reduce the rate of a common complication.
Surgeons on the panel agreed that capsular contracture is "the most challenging and disheartening" complication to manage following breast augmentation but that textured, round implants from the manufacturer Sientra reduce the risk.
"In my opinion," Dr. Cohen says during the discussion, "the feature that most distinguishes these implants is the textured shell which has the feel of a thinner, smooth implant combined with the stability and lower capsular contracture rate associated with textured implants."
The discussion, published last month in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, a publication produced by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, included some of the most well-regarded breast surgeons in the U.S., including Dr. M. Bradley Calobrace and Dr. W. Grant Stevens.
Dr. Cohen established his plastic surgery practice in the Phoenix area 10 years ago and has become one of the leading board-certified surgeons in the Southwest.
"I was honored to participate in a roundtable discussion with these surgeons who all have such thorough expertise in breast procedures," Dr. Cohen says. "It was a very valuable, informative session, and I hope others can benefit from what we found about the Sientra implants. I think bringing all our voices together to spread the word about this product can help a lot of patients avoid an unnecessary complication."
Breast augmentation patients at Dr. Cohen's Scottsdale practice and throughout the U.S. have had access to textured silicone gel implants for only a few years as they have come on the market. European surgeons have been using textured implants for years.
Sientra's textured, round High-Strength Cohesive Silicone Gel implants are an innovative product that Dr. Cohen and the other panelists agreed offers patients a unique option for breast enhancement surgery. Dr. Cohen is among the most experienced surgeons in the country in the use of these implants. He gained that experience as a fellow with Dr. Stevens during early clinical trials and was involved with hundreds of breast augmentation procedures using these implants.
"I really appreciated the softness of the implant combined with a supple textured shell," Dr. Cohen says. "When Sientra entered the marketplace in 2012, I was very eager to use this implant based on the positive experience I had during my fellowship."
Dr. Robert Cohen is a board-certified plastic surgeon (www.robertcohenmd.com) offering extensive options for plastic surgery procedures such as breast augmentation. Dr. Cohen received his medical degree from the Tulane University School of Medicine and trained in general and plastic surgery at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Dr. Cohen also received advanced surgery training in the prestigious W. Grant Stevens aesthetic surgery fellowship. He has presented numerous plastic surgery research studies through peer-reviewed journals and professional societies and is certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery. He is also a course instructor in complex breast surgery for the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
