Back to school season is an exciting time, but adults and kids need to remember to stay safe. Whether you're trying to make the first bell or leaving the building after class, always use caution.
ARVADA, CO, August 18, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- While parents and children throughout the state spend the month of August preparing for a new school year, personal injury law firm The Gilbert Law Group issued a reminder Wednesday of the hidden dangers that can accompany the return of regular classes.
"Back to school season is an exciting time, but adults and kids need to remember to stay safe," said Jim Gilbert, principal attorney at The Gilbert Law Group. "Whether you're trying to make the first bell or leaving the building after class, always use caution."
For young children, Gilbert said playground safety is always a consideration, with unsafe equipment, poor maintenance and inadequate protective materials and surfaces around play areas posing a threat to an injury-free recess.
"Kids can't necessarily tell when a situation is unsafe," he said. "Adult supervision and guidance on the playground is crucial to help children have fun without getting hurt."
The increased interaction between cars, school buses, bicyclists and pedestrians on the road presents a danger not only to children crossing the street but also for adults and especially teenagers driving through school zones and along major thoroughfares.
According to the National Safety Council, "teen crashes spike in September," with peak hours for accidents coinciding with the start and end of the school day.
Gilbert said that parents ultimately hold the key when it comes to the safety of teen drivers throughout the school year.
"Parents not only make the rules but also act as examples for their kids," he said. "Adults who don't text and drive or act carelessly behind the wheel are more likely to raise teen drivers who also respect the rules of the road."
