1. Stop trying to be someone else. Understanding that what makes a great public speaker is being able to inject personality into the information. There is no right way to be a great speaker; it shouldn't be a performance but rather a way to deliver the information in a calm, relaxed, excited and individual manner. Gavin Walsh believes for a public speaker to successfully engage an audience, they need to relax and let their personality shine through.

2. Don't look for approval. Focus on contributing. When delivering a speech, focus on making an impact. Did the message get across? Was it received well by the audience? These are recommended questions for a speaker to assess if their speech went well, advises Gavin Walsh.

3. Practice. A lot. Practice makes perfect. Becoming comfortable will take time, so it is recommended that entrepreneurs practice at every given opportunity. Groups are available and are always looking for volunteers to speak on their area of expertise at local conferences or association meetings. These smaller venues outside of work can be a safe way to learn and practice.

4. Watch TED Talks. Gavin Walsh recommends that entrepreneurs educate themselves through observation too and should watch how others deliver exceptional speeches and figure out which styles suit best. It also allows the message to be proved that there is no right way to deliver, however all kinds of personalities and styles can keep an audience engaged--not just the entertaining extrovert.

5. Record yourself speaking. There doesn't need to be a whole film crew; a smart device such as a phone or tablet is just as good. Watching yourself back allows a different perspective to be observed by looking at body language. Is there too much movement, or not enough engagement with the audience? Looking as an outsider offers a great opportunity to highlight areas to improve an entrepreneur's delivery.

6. Know your content cold. Again practice makes perfect, but instead of studying the speech, study the content so that the confidence is in the background knowledge. It allows for an aspect of improvisation as long as the core details are outlined and delivered, the audience will feel the delivery is more natural.
