"We can arm parents, grandparents and others who look after children with knowledge about their rights as they pertain to how and where their child was injured."- Jim Poe
ATLANTA, GA, August 21, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The personal injury law firm of James M. Poe, P.C., announces the creation and launch of its Child Injury Legal Guide, an online educational resource for parents and guardians of children growing up in Georgia.
"Nothing is more distressing to a parent than learning that their child has been hurt and not being able to get answers as to what happened and why," said Jim Poe, senior partner of the Atlanta law firm.
"We can't change what has happened to a child, but we can arm parents, grandparents and others who look after children with knowledge about their rights as they pertain to how and where their child was injured."
In addition to general information about what legal rights parents or guardians have when their child is hurt, the Child Injury Legal Guide also provides tips for keeping children safe. Each page concludes with a list of online sources for additional information.
The URL for the website is www.jmplawfirm.com/child-injury-legal-guide.
Sections of the guide include:
- Parents' and children's legal rights and how Georgia law views injuries to children that are caused by adults' negligence.
- Injury types, including head and brain injuries, internal injuries, soft tissue injuries, choking-related injuries and allergic food reactions. Pages in this section also discuss emotional and psychological injuries, including cyberbullying, which is a developing legal area as well as a growing threat to children.
- Injury locations and how the risks and legal responsibilities of adults in charge may differ according to where children's injuries occur.
Many people would be surprised to learn that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta calls injuries suffered in accidents the No. 1 killer of children in the U.S., Poe said.
In fact, every hour a child dies from preventable injuries, the CDC says. Car crashes, suffocation, drowning, poisoning, fires, and falls are among the most common ways children are injured or killed. Treating injuries is also the leading cause of medical spending for children, accounting for nearly $11.5 billion annually.
Poe and his son and legal partner, Matt Poe, focus on personal injury and wrongful death cases, which typically stem from accidents that can be attributed to negligence on the part of someone other than the victim.
"We have always thought of injuries to children as a focus of our practice," Jim Poe says. "We understand that parents who are looking after an injured or ill child are dealing with a highly emotional situation. As their attorneys, we can provide the sympathetic support they need and at the same time move forward in a professional manner to ensure their case is investigated and pressed to its full extent for the benefit of them, their child and their family."
Poe said the new website also explains some legal principles that most people would never encounter unless their child was injured and they considered a lawsuit. For example, in most cases teachers and other school employees in Georgia cannot be held liable for injuries a child suffers while at school or otherwise under an educator's supervision. The guide also explains the respective rights which parents and children have when an injury occurs and the provisions of law designed to protect children when any recovery is obtained.
Parents and guardians of young children who review the Child Injury Legal Guide will have a better idea about the rights they and their children have when accidents occur and can then make better choices because they are accurately informed, Poe said.
Poe said parents should contact James M. Poe, P.C., if their child has been seriously injured in an accident.
"We will respond quickly to set up a free legal consultation for you," he said. "You and your child have rights, and we are here to help you protect them."
