IRVINE, CA, August 31, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Hoag Orthopedic Institute, one of the largest volume providers of orthopedic care in the nation, through its Orthopedic Education and Research Institute (OERI), has received endorsement from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), a private, non-profit organization that reviews and accredits graduate medical education programs and the institutions that sponsor them, and will now provide fellowship education opportunities in sports medicine for physicians who have successfully finished an orthopedic residency.
Hoag Orthopedic Institute (HOI) and OERI obtained sponsorship, a requisite for earning accreditation from the ACGME, from Loma Linda University, which routinely has more than 650 residents in various specialties and subspecialties. Medical residents at Loma Linda University, which did not previously have fellowships in sports medicine, will now have the opportunity to receive their training from the physicians at HOI.
"It is an honor to be given the opportunity to work in collaboration with Loma Linda to provide our unique and innovative orthopedic training to the surgeons of tomorrow," said Dr. Carlos Prietto, president of HOI and chairman of OERI. "We are confident that through our direction and model of care, many will become some of the most elite surgeons of their generation as a result of our mentoring."
ACGME is a body that governs all the post graduate medical education in the country. After finishing medical school, medical students go on to residency programs to study, experience and learn various specialties and subspecialties of medicine leading up to their certification in their particular area of focus. This body sets standards for that education.
Hoag Orthopedic Institute will begin accepting residents in sports medicine in addition to its previously offered fellowship opportunities in joint and spine in 2016.
