Ms. Hunter has 25 years of experience in her field with exceptional adeptness in writing. As a writer and a professor at Moorpark College, she is writing the second novel of a two-novel deal, conducting extensive research on her topics of focus, mentoring and running workshops for young and aspiring writers, and teaching college students at the associate degree level in courses regarding creative writing, world literature, critical thinking and composition.
She has had a love for writing from a very young age and has always been interested in the issues of community and education. She has taught at Moorpark College since 2002 and has been writing and publishing short stories for many years. Ms. Hunter's first novel, "Losing Touch," was published in July of 2014, and her upcoming novel, "The Geography of Kitchen Tables," is set in post-apartheid South Africa. She has seen many professional successes through the encouragement and support of generous people around her, including editors, publishers and mentors.
A qualified professional in her field, Ms. Hunter is currently taking courses in advanced novel writing at UCLA Extension. She also received a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing from San Francisco State University and a Bachelor of Education in English literature and classical studies from Hull University. She is also certified to teach English as a second language. Today, she maintains affiliations with The Greater Los Angeles Writers Society (GLAWS), PEN American Center, the Association of Writers and Writing Programs (AWP), Poets and Writers, and the Ventura County Poet Laureate Committee. As a testament to her professional expertise, she is a three-time nominee of the Pushcart Prize, and has received the Women's Domination Fiction Prize in Egypt, the Africa Book Club Award, the Cobalt Literary Magazine Fiction Prize, the H.E. Francis Fiction Award, the Arthur Edelstein Short Fiction Prize, and Glimmer Train's Very Short Fiction Award for her story, "Blessed are the Meek." Ms. Hunter serves as a volunteer mentor. In the coming years, she hopes to publish more novels and continue to get involved with helping aspiring writers and underserved communities.
