Competitiveness was measured in three ways during a study by Valenti
1. Personal victory: Winning for victory's sake or to be superior to others
2. Enjoyment of competition: The positive emotions associated with competition
3. Conflict: The willingness to take risks and enter into situations that involve conflict and that could result in victory or defeat
When the study was completed the results showed that there was success in sales between competitive and non-competitive subjects. It was found that those classed as 'competitive' and 'non-competitive' both demonstrated higher sales results than those classed with 'moderate competitiveness'. Valenti concluded that the competitive group were highly motivated to be the best and took a great pleasure in winning. The non-competitive group also found success due to the ability to find success by focusing on the task and avoiding distractions that come with competition. The control group 'moderately' competitive were found to be distracted by competition as they were not motivated by the desire to win. Valenti concluded that highly competitive people were more successful in securing sales but not considerably more than non-competitive subjects.
