He is the first person in his family to attend college (he earned a Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in political science and soil science from Brigham Young University in 1982), and then received a JD from the University of Idaho Law School three years later.

Reed Larsen is a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He previously served as president of the Idaho State Bar, and president and secretary of the Sixth District Bar Association, among others. He was admitted to practice before all State and Federal Courts in Idaho in 1985, The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in 1999, and the Shoshone Bannock Tribal Court in 1986.
