WESTFIELD, NJ, September 17, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- "Unlike many other plants that shed pollen in the spring and summer, ragweed typically waits until the days begin to get shorter and starts to flower as the daylight hours drop to less than 12-14 hours each day. So, even though ragweed starts emitting pollen in August, ragweed is really a fall allergen. Here we are, and we are really starting to see patients complain about itchy watery eyes," explained Joel Confino, M.D. of The Eye Care & Surgery Center in Westfield, New Jersey.
Data from the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America suggests that some 10-20% percent of Americans suffer from ragweed allergy or hay fever. It is estimated that a single ragweed plant can release one billion grains of pollen over the course of a single ragweed season with the grains being so light that they float and easily spread with even mild wind or breezes. In fact ragweed pollen has been detected as far as 400 miles out to sea and up to two miles up in the atmosphere. "The problem is really common throughout New Jersey. This year we started seeing the ragweed season and itchy eye complaints beginning in early August and we suspect they will last through October. This is going to be a tough season for sufferers," shared Dr. Confino.
